ABSTRACT

The study is based on the impact of EFCC in curbing insecurity and cybercrime in Nigeria, using Edo State as case study. Also discovered in the study, is the concept of crime and cybercrime, the various forms of cybercrime and its tools as well as need for the adequate regulations of the cyberspace. It is one of the findings of the study that there is a peculiar problem of cybercrime in Nigeria and that attempts made to curb the menace did not yield much result. In addition, it was realized in the study that one of the factors contributing to the rise of cybercrime in Edo state Nigeria was the weakness of the law enforcement agency.1 The Nigerian police who are constitutional empowered to enforce the provisions of the Cybercrime Act, 2015 only visit cybercafé to arrest cyber criminals and claim their share of the cyber booty without making effort to get them prosecuted.2 The study revealed that, to be a victim of cybercrime does not depend on individual's level of awareness. This is to say that, both those who are aware of cybercrimes and those who are not aware, are all prospective victims of cyber criminality. It was also found that, young people are the major perpetrators of cybercrimes as technological revolution emerged in their generation, so filled with moral decadence.3 This is in corroboration with Olaide and Adewole, who observed that a sizeable number of cyber criminals in Nigeria fall within the youthful age. The youths in Edo state have discovered different ways of using Fibre Optics (internet) in carrying out cybercrime activities.
