Abstract
The impact of early Christian missionaries on African indigenous religions is a complex historical phenomenon characterized by a multifaceted interplay between two diverse belief systems. Christian missionary is an aspect that is highly associated with the changes that have taken place in the field of religion in different parts of Africa, including Eastern Nigeria. The emergence of Christianity as a religion in Nigeria came in different shades. While many sees it as one of the best things that has happened to Africa others sees it as the death of real African ideology. the profound consequences of Christian missionary activities on the indigenous religious practices and cultures are heavily seen Orlu. Hence this work is designed to critically examine the Impact of Early Christian Missionary on The Indigenous Religions in Orlu, Imo State. This work employed the historical and descriptive methodology. In order to ascertain reliable data, various methods of data collection were employed. These include oral interview and personal observation. Literatures are reviewed. Journal articles and internet are consulted. This research work discovered the following: the arrival of Christian missionaries in Africa brought forth a significant wave of religious transformation. While some indigenous communities embraced Christianity and underwent religious conversions, many others confronted the disruption of their traditional religious practices. Syncretism, a blending of elements from both traditions, was observed in various contexts, reflecting the adaptability of African societies.In addition to religious changes, the influence of Christian missions extended to the cultural, social, and economic domains. Education and literacy, introduced by missionaries, had profound effects on African communities, offering valuable skills while potentially undermining traditional knowledge systems.
