THE IMPACT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF CHEMISTRY EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of domestic violence on the academic performance of chemistry Education students in the University of Benin, Edo state. The improvement of students’ academic performance, class attendance and school behavioural pattern can be affected by various factors including getting abused.

This study adopted a survey research design sampling technique In order to achieve the purpose of this study, Twenty three research questions were raised. The sample for the study consists of sixty (60) respondents which were selected using the simple random sampling method. Data was collected with the aid of questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the instrument were ascertained using the exert judgment and test-retest procedures.  Simple percentage and frequency count were used to analyse collected data.

Based on the findings of the study it was ascertained that child abuse has become a global problem that needs to be tackled if children are to be given the right to education and freedom. Early exposure to adverse childhood experiences including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; neglect; violence; household dysfunction; parental substance abuse or mental illness; and an absent parent are strong predictors of poor academic performance. Finally, it was recommended amongst others that school counsellor should be employed to assist students cope with Domestic violence in the school environment and beyond.  Students should be protected from all forms of abuse and neglect due to their helpless position in the society. A lot of support from government should be put into place so that they can enforce policies that address the effects of domestic violence on students who are most vulnerable since they are still young and dependent and also have no choice.
