ABSTRACT

This research was carried out at Green Hills Farm located at Ologbo, Ikpoba okha local government area, Edo State, Nigeria to determine the effect of depth (0-15 cm), (15-30 cm), (30- 45 cm) on selected physical and chemical properties of an Ultisol. Soil samples were collected for both physical and chemical parameters. Samples for physical parameters were collected at depths of 0-15 cm, 15-30 cm, 30-45 cm using core samplers while samples for chemical parameters were collected using soil auger for same depths as above. The result indicated that at (p<0.05) level of probability, it was observed that the chemical properties at depth 0-15 cm for all the treatments there were significantly different for O.C (4.19- 9.58 g/kg), T.N (0.21-0.48 g/kg), P (67.7-276.7 mg/kg), K (0.15-0.28 cmol/kg) and Na (0.20-0.26 cmol/kg), while there were no significant difference for Ca (0.2-0.28 cmol/kg) and Mg (0.18-0.2 cmol/kg). For chemical properties at depth 15-30 cm and 30-45 cm for all the treatments there were no significant difference among all the parameters (P>0.05) level of probability. The physical properties at depth 0-15 cm for all the treatments there were significantly different (P<0.05) for Ksat (0.32-0.35 cm/hr), Total porosity (45.29-46.42 %) and Aggregate stability (0.76-0.77), while there were no significant differences (P>0.05) among mean values for B.D (1.42-1.45 kg/m3 ) and WHC (0.23-0.28). At depth 15-30 cm for all the treatment there were significant differences (P<0.05) for B.D (1.49-1.55 kg/m3 ) and WHC (0.20-0.28), while Ksat (0.23-0.28 cm/hr), Total porosity (41.57-43.31 %) and Aggregate stability (0.6-0.66 ) were not significantly different (P>0.05). At depth 30-45 cm, there were no significant differences among mean values for B.D (1.54-1.57 kg/m3 ), WHC (0.19-0.23) and Aggregate stability (0.52-0.55) at (P>0.05) while Ksat (0.21-0.24 cm/hr) and Total porosity (40.88-43.20 %) were significantly different from one another (P<0.05) level of probability.
