ABSTRACT
This project report delves into the intricate interplay between cultural identity and architecture in the context of Benin City, Nigeria. With a rich historical legacy and a vibrant cultural tapestry, Benin City stands as a testament to the profound influence of cultural heritage on architectural forms and urban landscapes. This study aims to unravel the dynamic relationship between Benin's cultural identity and its architectural expressions, examining the continuum between traditional practices and contemporary interpretations.
Employing a multidisciplinary research approach, this study encompasses archival research, field surveys, architectural analysis, and interviews with local residents, architects, and cultural experts. By delving into the historical evolution of Benin City's architecture and juxtaposing it with modern interventions, the research seeks to elucidate how cultural identity has shaped and continues to shape the built environment.
The report commences by contextualizing the cultural identity of Benin City within its historical and sociocultural backdrop. It explores the enduring influence of the Benin Kingdom's rich heritage, artistic traditions, and socio-religious practices on architectural typologies and spatial organization. This historical perspective serves as a foundation for dissecting the ways in which cultural identity is manifested in contemporary architectural expressions.
