ABSTRACT
In Nigeria, the fashion industry has developed more exposure, participants, structure, presence, earnings and trainings. A recent overview of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) reveals that the Textile, Apparel and Footwear sector contributes to the nation’s GDP. Nigeria is a country that depend mostly on Contemporary fashion since westernization and civilization. This has resulted to decline in indigenous attire usage. Fashion industry has become an internationally and highly globalized industry and as a result of this, there is a growing competition in the industry. The aim of this study is to describe and analyse the impact of Contemporary Fashion on indigenous attires in Nigeria and investigated the social and environmental impacts of Contemporary fashion products in the country and identified the untapped benefits of fashion, using the qualitative research method. Primary sources of data were gotten from interviews, focus group discussion and the secondary source of data were sorted from related interactions to the study. It was found out that Contemporary has influenced the Nigerian Cultural space making both contemporary and local fashion to coexist. It is therefore recommended that the strategies that the government, fashion entrepreneurs and business owners and fashion consumers can apply to the industry to further boost the growth of the Nigerian economy and fashion industry that can enhance growth and development of Nigerian Cultural attire.
