ABSTRACT
This study sought to carry out an analysis on the impact of child labour on the academic performance of children using Oredo local government area as a case study. The major objective of this study is to examine the impact of child Labour on the academic performance of primary school children. To achieve this, the following questions were raised, What is the effect of child Labour on the academic performance of primary school children? What are different acts of child Labour? Is there a relationship between child Labour and the academic performance in primary schools children? And lastly, What is being done to address the problem of child Labour among the school going children?. The population of this study consist of children in child Labour from all primary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo. A sample size of 60 respondents were used, The simple random sampling technique was used to select five primary schools from Oredo Local Government Area. From the five primary schools, twelve teachers who volunteered to fill the questionnaire were selected from each of the primary schools. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. The questionnaire is divided into two sections. Section A contains the personal data of the respondents, section B is made up of 12 items to elicit responses from the subject matter. It was rated using a 4-point Likert scale of Strongly Agree (SA) = 4 Points, Agree (A) = 3 points, Disagree (D) = 2 points, Strongly disagree (SD) = 1 point. The result of the study has shown that child Labour affects Children’s academic performance, it was deduced from the responses of the respondents that Child Labour tends to negatively impact a child’s ability to excel academically, and there is need for the government to enforce laws that prohibit children from engaging in hazardous work and also Providing support to families, especially in economically disadvantaged areas, through social services, job opportunities, and access to healthcare, all these which can reduce the reliance on child labour. Based on the findings and conclusion drawn, it was recommended that, There is need to Strengthen and enforce laws that prohibit child labor, including setting minimum age requirements for employment and regulating working conditions. There is need to Invest in education infrastructure and programs to ensure that all children have access to quality education, there is need for the Government to Address the root causes of child labor by tackling poverty through social welfare programs, job creation initiatives for adults, and support for marginalized communities. These and many others, were recommended for the stud
