ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of child hawking on the academic performance in junior secondary School in Oredo Local Government Area in Edo state. The aim was to find out why students hawk, and how it affects their academics performance in school. To this effect four research question were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for this study and the population of this study consisted of all students hawkers in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo. The sample size was 20 was used. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire for students who hawk in busy roads, junctions, and market places were trading take place.   The Frequency, counts and percentage were used for data analysis. The study reveals that parents, guidance should not allow their under aged children who hawk, and they should provide all necessary requirements needed for their children to be fully educated in school, so as to produced meaningful and sound citizens. The findings of this study among others include: identified structural inequality as one of the causes of street hawking, poverty and inequality as the major causes of Street hawking. It postulated that street hawking as economic, environment, and underemployment, massive retrench, unemployment and poor quality of life. It was recommended that: with the aid of mass media, government should regularly educate parents the usefulness of informal education. Guidance and counseling should always be given to students in other to guide them in choosing their carrier, decisions making, and also know the situation they are facing, and help them with possible solutions.
