ABSTRACT

The study explored traditional associations as a catalyst for community development and crime prevention and control in Oshimili. Thus far, the concepts of traditional associations and community development have been operationalised in this study to broaden our horizons in the subject of discussion. These associations are: age grades, town unions, masquerades/traditional secret societies, ‘Umuada’ (patrilineal daughters), ‘Umunna’ (kinsmen), youth organisations, and the like. The study revealed that the Oshimili in Southern Nigeria lived and is still living a communal life. The policy thrust of this society has always been characterised by traditional associations which carry out a number of highly commendable and community-felt projects, such as building or renovation of market malls, schools, town halls/civic centers, culverts/bridges, etc. From this study, it is observed that there is no rigid partnership between local government officials and the Asaba Development Union. The government’s failures in the various community developments emanated from lack of national philosophical base, community participation and lack of cohesive identity, lack of planning and inability of the government to optimize local resources. In other words, the government at all level should encourage communities to partake fully in all issues concerning their development, morally, financially and otherwise.
