ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of adult education programmes on family planning awareness, attitudes, and adoption among adults in Edo State, Nigeria. The study aims to (1) assess how adult education influences attitudes and perceptions towards family planning, (2) identify the most commonly adopted family planning techniques among participants of adult education programmes, and (3) explore the socio-cultural, religious, and economic factors affecting the adoption of family planning methods.
A descriptive survey research design was employed, with data collected through structured questionnaires administered to 100 respondents, including adult learners and facilitators. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages.
Findings reveal that adult education significantly enhances awareness and acceptance of family planning methods. A majority of respondents acknowledged that participating in adult education programmes positively influenced their knowledge and perceptions of family planning. Modern contraceptive methods, such as pills, injections, and intrauterine devices (IUDs), were found to be the most commonly adopted techniques. However, traditional methods, including withdrawal and herbal remedies, remain prevalent due to cultural influences. The study also found that socio-cultural norms, religious beliefs, and economic constraints play crucial roles in family planning decisions. While education helps overcome misinformation and resistance, economic barriers, particularly affordability and accessibility, continue to limit contraceptive use.
The study concludes that adult education is a critical tool in improving family planning adoption by equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and addressing misconceptions. However, structural and cultural barriers must also be tackled to ensure wider acceptance.
Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening adult education programmes, implementing culturally sensitive awareness campaigns, improving access to affordable contraceptive services, involving religious and community leaders in advocacy efforts, and increasing male participation in family planning education. These measures will enhance reproductive health outcomes and promote informed decision-making among adults in Edo State and beyond.
