ABSTRACT

Oxytocin is a hormone in human beings that is synthesized by specialized cells in the supra optic and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. Oxytocin is well known for its role in parturition and lactation, but it has a variety of other effects, both the good and bad effects on humans. Oxytocin plays a role in reproduction, it helps in maintaining monogamous relationships, it creates an effective bond between mother and child. It is called the “love hormone” because it increases in love and trust. Oxytocin also when administered can cause increased blood pressure, postpartum depression, nausea and vomiting, death of the fetus. Oxytocin production and secretion is controlled by a positive feedback mechanism where release of the hormone causes an action that stimulates more of its own release. For example, when contraction of the uterus starts during childbirth, oxytocin is released and this stimulates more contractions and more oxytocin to be released. Oxytocin hormone is commercially available as intravenous injection, intramuscular injection and as nasal sprays for various purposes. Oxytocin is a hormone with a great potential and it is a great facilitator of life.
