ABSTRACT

This study investigated the factors influencing student teachers’ performance during teaching practice: a case study faculty of education university of Benin.In order to achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were formulated to guide the researcher. The purposed of the study was to determine factors influencing student teachers’ performance during teaching practice, a case study of the University of Benin.

Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for the investigation while the population was seven thousand, three hundred and sixty nine (7,369) students in the Faculty of education, university of Benin. The sample was 100 students who were composed through proportionate random sampling technique. Relevant data were collected from the sample through personal contact method of administration of copies of researchers’ made Factors Influencing Student Teachers’ Performance During Teaching Practice Questionnaire (FISTPDTPQ).

The data collected were presented in Tables and analyzed using descriptive statistics comprising of mean. A criterion of mean score of 2.5 was used as the benchmark for the purpose of decision making. The findings from analyzed dada include: that the influence of host teachers on student teachers' performance during teaching practice is high. Cooperation from the host teachers help to improve student teachers' performance during teaching practices; also, student teachers' attitude towards teaching practice has great influence on their performance during teaching practice. Also, the influence of learning element on student teachers' performance is high. Furthermore, accommodation greatly influences student teachers' performance during teaching practice. Based on the findings, some recommendation were made which include: There should be an effective and efficient professional training, seminal towards creating awareness on the roles of host teachers to students teachers before going to teaching practice; Effective programs and orientation should be organize for students teacher so as to inculcate in them positive mind-set towards teaching practice; Students should always relate their academic needs and challenges especially that of accommodation during teaching to the university authority.
