ABSTRACT
The study focuses on the extent of use of instructional materials in the effective teaching of chemistry in senior secondary schools on Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state. Four research question and purpose of study was raised to examine the extent at which instructional materials is used in the teaching of Chemistry in Senior Secondary Schools, identify the importance of instructional materials in teaching of chemistry In Senior Secondary Schools, Identify the types of instructional materials being used for teaching in order to enhance teaching in Chemistry in Senior Secondary Schools and identify ways of improving the use of instructional materials in Chemistry in Senior Secondary Schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area.
Descriptive survey research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The sample size of the study consist of thirty (30) public and private secondary schools using simple random sampling technique and also thirty 30 teachers were selected. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire developed by the researcher and was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts from the Department of Vocational and Technical Education. The reliability coefficient was 0.69 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha correlation coefficient method.
The study revealed that Teachers in Ovia North East Local government area seldom make use of instructional materials in teaching chemistry and Practical’s and Laboratory works are found to interest the students more than lectures and note taking method of teaching. The study recommend that Government should ensure adequate provision of funds for the procurement of instructional materials and laboratory equipment that are not available in senior secondary schools and that Examination bodies such as WAEC and NECO should set practical examination questions in such a way to cover all the concepts that requires the use of instructional materials in senior secondary school chemistry curriculum.
