THE EXTENT OF THE USE OF AUDIO -VISUAL MATERIALS IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF HISTORY IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH- EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out examine the extent of the use of audio -visual materials in the teaching and learning of history in junior secondary schools in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study: how does time affect the use of audio-visual materials in the teaching and learning of history in junior secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State? how does teacher’s qualification affect the use of audio-visual materials in the teaching and learning of history in junior secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State? what are the available audio-visual materials used in the teaching and learning of history in junior secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State? to what extent does the use of audio-visual materials used in the teaching and learning of history in junior secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State? The descriptive research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 100 respondents were selected from the total population for the purpose of this study. Simple random sampling technique was used for the study. The major findings of the study revealed It was seen that teachers’ qualification affects their use of instructional material because students understand the lesson when teachers’ express mastery use of audio-visual aids, teachers lack of proper training leads to improper use of audio-visual aids by teachers. It also seen that most of the school are lacking in the use of audio- visual instructional materials such as overhead project, video and television, Computers, Filmstrip, Ipad, Motion Pictures Film Charts Cartoons, and Model it is seen that the lacking of this audio instructional material may contribute to ineffectiveness of the teachers during teaching since instruction materials are very important during class room instruction because it hard to learn if one does not pay attention. It is seen that all this audio-instructional material is rarely used in class room during teaching of history in junior secondary schools in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
