THE EVALUATION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMME

ABSTRACT

The research study evaluated the implementation of early childhood programme in compliance with national minimum standard in public school in Egor local government area of Edo state. In carrying out this study, six research questions were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population for the study consisted of all the teachers of all the 15 ECEDE centers and 2787 pupils in public ECCDE in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Sample and sampling technique was used for the entire population of the study. A checklist and a questionnaire on Compliance with Minimum Standard in Early Childhood Education was the instrument used for the study. The instrumentwas validated by the supervisor and two experts in the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counselling Psychology and subjected to Kuder Richardson 20 and a reliability coefficient of 0.88 was obtained. The data collected were analyzed using frequent count, simple percentage and mean for all the research questions. The findings of this study revealed that that facilities/ furniture, instructional materials, Health facilities, nutritional requirements, monitoring and supervisory activities required for the teaching of pupils in early childhood programme are not in compliance with the recommended national minimum standard and that the ratio of care givers to pupils in Early Childhood Education Programme in Egor L.G.A. of Edo state is fair. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that Government at all levels should as a matter of priority provide adequate facilities/ furniture in every Public Early Childhood Education schools so as to meet the recommendations of the minimum standard.
