SUMMARY
This research found the leaf, root, and stem extract of Emilia sonchifolia to be effective in treating both induced ocular inflammation and induced elevated intraocular pressure. These results suggest that Emilia sonchifolia (tassel flower) is a potent, inexpensive, safe, and readily available ocular anti-inflammatory and ocular hypotensive agent that can alleviate inflammatory effects and reduce high levels of intraocular pressure. These findings also indicate that the different extracts can be used to treat corneo-conjunctival inflammation and lower intraocular pressure. Intraocular pressure (IOP) increase is the primary risk factor for the development of glaucoma, which is currently the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Therefore, Emilia sonchifolia may be a useful source of medication for preventing blindness due to increased IOP.
