ABSTRACT

The study examined the effects of sexual violence on adolescent girls in Apana community of Edo state. The objective of the study was to find out the prevalence of sexual violence on adolescent girls in Apana Village; to examine the effect  of sexual violence on adolescent girls in Apana Village; to examine the perception of the public on commonest causes of sexual violence on adolescent girls in Apana Village; to examine the public perception on the possible measure to prevent sexual violence on adolescent girls Apana Village and to identify the social work intervention practices towards sexual violence in Apana Village.

The cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. 300 copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondents in Apana community of Edo state. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The empirical result revealed that the incidence of this sexual violence on girls is on the increase. The result also showed that persistent failure to meet a child’s physical and/or psychological needs makes adolescent girls vulnerable to sexual violence.  The study recommends the need for government at all levels should mount intensive enlightenment campaigns through public talks, seminars, conferences and workshops to create more awareness on the need for sexuality education and that the law against sexual abuse should be enforced effectively; such as life imprisonment for anybody involved in sexual abuse.
