THE EFFECTS OF PARENTAL DIVORCE ON CHILDREN'S ACADEMICS PERFORMANCE IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of parental divorce on children's academics performance in EGOR LOCAL government Area of Edo state. The main aim was to examine the level of which divorce affects early childhood education. Three research questions were raised. The design used was survey and the instrument use to carry out this project was a structured questionnaire carried out by me under the supervision of an expert in order to ensure appropriateness and completeness of the study. The population of the study consisted of parents and teachers of the preschool. The questionnaire was filled by parents. The findings reveals that several factors are responsible for parental divorce, parental divorce affects the academic performance of a children, and it also affects the emotional stability of the children. In the course of this research work, we were able to understand that children from intact homes perform better academically than children from divorced homes, the educational needs of children are not satisfactorily met. The following suggestions were made; Parents should put their children into consideration especially their education before deciding to divorce. Society should promote cultural values, norms and also help the social institutions within its locality to enlighten families on the effects of parental divorce as it poses a big effects on the children's academic performance. Government should allocate scholarships, grants to children from divorced homes whose single parents find it difficult to cope. Schools should try as much as possible to provide counsellors and guidance to give children from divorced homes advice and care. Single parents should try as much as possible to provide their children with loving and caring environment and also teachers in school should not discriminate children from divorced homes.
