ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effects of mother tongue interference in the study of English language among secondary school students in Ovia North East LGA of Edo State. Three (3) research questions were generated to guide the study. The researcher adopted descriptive survey research design for the study. The population of the study is focused on six thousand, nine hundred and ninety (6,990) students. The simple random technique was used to select the sample. One hundred (100)students were drawn from three (3) different secondary schools. The major instruments used for data collection was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated and the reliability was determined through test - retest method. The analysis of the data revealed that the presence of mother tongue highly influences the way students speak and write in English. It was further revealed that there are few English language teachers that can teach English efficiently. It was therefore recommended that schools should include inter-schools competitions like debates, essay competitions and spelling B, students should be allowed to express themselves freely in class without any form of mockery, the library should be well equipped with various English textbooks and English teachers should do more practical works like comprehension reading in the classroom.
