ABSTRACT
The objective of the study was to examine theeffects of marital disputes on secondary school student’s academic performance in Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State.
The descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. The population consisted of adults in Ovia northeast local government in Edo state. A sample size of 150 was selected for the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. Data gathered was analysed using descriptive statistics.
According to the study's findings, low self-esteem, extensive alcohol and drug use, a lack of affection, rage, and hostility are all characteristics that contribute to marital conflicts. The study also discovered that student academic performance is negatively impacted by marital conflicts. Parental attention to their children is significantly impacted by marital conflict. Physical aggressive tendencies, psychological aggression, and a sense of neglect are all effects of marital conflict on children. By offering self-help groups, assistance, and counselling, removing children from broken homes, and fostering healthy and non-violent relationships, the government and society as a whole may significantly reduce the threat posed by broken homes. This research holds that everyone in the community, including teachers, neighbors and those who love children, has a responsibility to ensure that all children grow up in an environment free of violence, regardless of who their birth parents or guardians are. It is recommended that the Guidance and counseling services should be available in schools at all levels to help children from dysfunctional families.
