ABSTRACT

Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system characterized by the inability to produce the clinical conception following a minimum of twelve months of consistent sexual activity without protection. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a plant placed in the family of Zingiberaceae. One of the largest and most significant spice grown in Nigeria is the fluted ginger. It is typically characterized to as a spice with leaves. The plant has been employed for man. years in traditional medicine to treat infertility, fever, cardiovascular arrhythmia and conjunctivitis. The fertility drug Proviron was used to evaluate the fertility properties of the seed part of Zingiber officinale plant. To evaluate fertility properties on body weight and male reproductive organ mass (testis), reproductive hormones such as Testosterone (TST), Estrogen 2 (E2) and Leuthenizing hormone and total sperm cell count, % progressive motility were employed. The result obtained from phytochemistry study revealed the presence of glycosides, carbohydrates and saponin. The fertility study revealed a noteworthy increase in the body weight and male reproductive organ mass (testis), reproductive hormones such as Testosterone (TST), Estrogen 2 (E2) and Leuthenizing hormone and total sperm cell count, % progressive motility indicating fertility activity of the extract at dosage concentration of 500 as well as 1000 mg/kg. It can be concluded the phytochemical compounds present in Zingiber officinale can promote pregnancy and possesses fertility properties.
