THE EFFECTS OF FLOODING ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES IN USELU

ABSTRACT

The study examines The ef ects of flooding on the socio-economic activities in Uselu. three(3)research questions were raised to guide the study, while a sample size of twenty five (25) persons in Uselu were used for the study. The instrument for the study was a questionnaire. A questionnaire developed by the researchers based on likert 4 –point scale was used for the study and data generated with the instrument were analyzed using frequency table and percentages. Research result shows that some of the major problems encountered during flooding are:damaged goods and livestock, flooding make tourism difficult by making the place unattractive,makes going to work/school difficult, and flooding disrupts business supply chain. Prominent among the problems associated with flooding on the socio-economic activities of people at Uselu are bad drainage systems and government not responding quickly to flooding. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made:Develop capacityforundertaking risk identification, monitoring and assessment. Prepare comprehensive hazard maps and vulnerability analysis for the country. Implement the National Disaster Preparedness Framework and Plan at national and state levels. Develop National Disaster Risk Reduction(DRR) Information and Communication System.
