ABSTRACT

The effective stress is critical to the shear strength, compaction, stability of a reservoir. It is not a physical quantity hence cannot be measured but calculated. The objectives of this study is to determine the effects of the relationship between the effective stress and the pore pressure and porosity. The method employs the use of wireline logs in the studied field to determine the effective stresses using the geophysical tool Techlog. Using the Amoco equation, the vertical/ overburden stress was computed and calculated, then the pore pressure was calculated using the Eaton’s equation, The effective stress is then calculated using Biot’s equation which was modified from Terzaghi’s as it’s the differential of the overburden stress and pore pressure where the results indicated that the increase in pore pressure would result to a decrease in effective stress . The relationship between the porosity and effective stress was also established as porosity was also calculated using and the data editor tool of Techlog, plotted against the effective stress where the straight line plot indicates that porosity increases with increasing effective stress. Porosity is not only dependent on depth, but also a function of effective stress.
