ABSTRACT

One of the most important processes affecting the contemporary position of African Women is urbanization: urbanization is taking place at unprecedented rate that is much faster than economic advances. The process of urbanization although stimulated by economic development makes women particularly vulnerable to poverty. Africa women are faced with wholly new conditions of life and labour. The urban economy is highly monetized the need for money is more imperative and its absence makes life perilous for women. Rapid urbanization exposes urban women to dangers of exploitation, prostitution and urban slum life women are denied access to opportunities, gender inequality and discrimination are seen in the areas of employment, housing, political participation, education and health care. This study will examine the need and challenges facing urban women and the effect of urbanization and poverty among women are the effect or urbanization and poverty among women in our community. The structured questionnaire will be used to determine the effects in women in our community.
