Abstract
The study sought to investigate the effect of the Socratic Method on students art performance in secondary school. To achieve the objectives of the study, three research questions were raised to guide the investigation. The Likert Scale method was utilized for this study. The population of the study comprised of students in Egor Local Government Area in Edo State, Nigeria. A total of 64 respondents constituted the sample of the study. The research instrument was titled "Effect of the Socratic Method on students’ art performance in secondary school." The project supervisor validated the instrument. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The descriptive analysis involved frequency count and mean score analysis. A criterion mean of 2.50 was set as the benchmark for decision-making. After the analysis, it was found that the Socratic Method when implemented brought about a difference in the students’ ability to think independently. It also revealed that there was a great improvement in students’ performance after their exposure to the Socratic Method. Furthermore, the study indicated that the Socratic Method helps in boosting students’ self-esteem. The study concluded that it would be advisable for the Socratic Method to be applied in schools and, not only in arts but also other subject. Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, it was recommended, among others, that the Socratic Method should be integrated into schools and in other subjects.
