Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of strike action on the educational achievement of students at the University of Benin. The study adopted a descriptive approach with an initial sample size of 400 the participants. Six questions for study were generated from six purposes, resulting in the development of a total of three nu to steer the inquiry. The data collecting tool was a questionnaire tailored to the objective of the study and delivered to undergraduate students. In order to answer research questions, data was collected and analyzed using straightforward proportions and frequencies, along with the mean and standard deviation. At 0.05 alpha level of significance, the 2 -test was utilized to evaluate null hypotheses 1, 2, and 3. The findings revealed that the majority of those who participated agreed with all of the items regarding students' perceptions of ASUU strike action, strike actions influence students' CGPA as well as the general educational achievement of the students, and there is a significant relationship between students' reading habits and their educational pursuits as a result of the ASUU strike, among other influences. Based on the study's findings, it was determined that the government's education policies, as well as the accompanying inactions and strike by those affiliated with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), had contributed to the low academic performance of university students in Nigeria. It was suggested that the needless confrontation between the government and ASUU not be allowed to threaten the academics and future of Nigerian students. Education in Nigeria should be given pride of place, and the government should work hard to reach the United Nations' minimum level. Nigerian universities cannot stay closed indefinitely, and the government must take steps to permanently end the strike crisis in order to provide a conducive learning atmosphere for our students.
