ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess and evaluate the effect of stress on employees’ performance in selected banks in Benin City, Nigeria. The main objective was to investigate the effect of stress on employees’ performance in Nigerian banking industry. The specific objectives of the study were; to investigate the effect of stress on employee productivity in Nigerian banking industry; examine the effect of stress on employee’s commitment in Nigerian banking industry; ascertain the effect of stress on employee’s quality service delivery in Nigerian banking industry and examine the effect of stress on employee’s job satisfaction in Nigerian banking industry. The research design adopted for this study was the survey method. The population of the study comprised of all employees of Guaranty Trust bank, United Bank for Africa, First bank, Skye bank and Zenith bank all in Benin City, and a sample of one hundred and sixty nine employees were selected using the Taro Yamane method of sampling. Data was collected by means of questionnaire and personal interview. Simple linear regression was used for data analysis. The hypotheses were tested at 5% degree of significance. It was found out that work stress has effects on employee’s productivity; that work stress has effects on employee’s commitment; that work stress has effects on employee’s quality service delivery and that work stress has effects on employee’s job satisfaction in the sampled banks. The study recommended that management of the bank should try to promote conditions that would reduce stress since it has effect on productivity, commitment, quality of service rendered to customers, employee’s job satisfaction.
