ABSTRACT
This paper focuses on the effects of social network on Senior Secondary School students study habit in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. (A case study of University Demonstration Secondary School). The population of this study comprised of one-hundred (100) SS3 students of University Demonstration Secondary School in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. 100 questionnaires were administered but only 88 was collected and used for the analysis. Six research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study employed descriptive research survey design. Validity of instrument was made by the researcher's supervisor and one other lecturer in the University of Benin, Edo State. A test re-test method was used for establishing the reliability of the instrument. The instrument was first administered to ten (10) SS3 students of university Demonstration Secondary School and repeated after one week. Copies of the instrument were analyzed using Cronbach's Alpha method to determine the internal consistency of the instrument which gave a reliability of 0.75.
The findings of the study revealed that social network has both positive and negative effects on student study habits. It can be used for educational purposes as well as negative purposes like crime and fraud.
The researcher recommended that the use of social network should be encouraged in schools. The researcher also recommended that seminars should be organized for students in order to acquaint them with dangers of using social network for the wrong purposes.
