ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effects of single-parenting on the academic performance of adolescent students in irele local Government Area of Ondo State. The aim of this study examined the effect of single-parenting on the academic performance among adolescents student; find out if there exist relationship between single parenting and academic performance; ascertained the cause of single parenting in Irele Local Government of Ondo State, three research question guided this study. The study adopted a survey research method. The population of this study was all secondary schools students in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State. with total population of 6,321 students in the five selected secondary schools. sample size of 100 respondents was used. The test re-test reliability of the instrument was use with a coefficient of 0.81. Simple percentage and mean were used to analyze the data retrieved from the respondent. it was revealed from the study that Children raised by single parents face additional challenge that can impact their academic performance, single parents do not have enough time to show commitment to their children’s school activities, Single parents often have less time to actively engage in their children’s educational activities and Financial constraints face by single parents can hinder access to educational resources, Financial limitations experienced by single parents can affect their children’s access to educational resources, actively involvement and communication between single parents and teachers can ease academic challenges, students from single parent homes perform poorly in their academic achievement due to lack of having good relationship with other children in school, Single-parenting can be emotionally challenging for both the parent and the child and that Single parents may have less time to devote to their children's education. It is concluded that most of the students from single parent homes experience low performance in their academic activities compare with students from two parent families rather have a high level of parental participation in their academic work. the findings also suggest that single parenting has a negative effect on the academic performance of students, lead to deviant behaviours and lateness to school. The results obtained from this study have greater implication for classroom teachers, parents, counselors, curriculum planners and psychologists. The study also recommends that the government should initiate educative and enlightenment program on how to improve and sustain two parents family through the radio, television and other mass media. Marital disunity is a major cause of single parenting. Therefore, to avoid this, parents should tolerate, accommodate, appreciate and understand each other in marriage.
