Abstract

This study explores the effect of school structure and environment on the performance of secondary school students in Ovia north east local government area of Edo State. The purpose of the study is to examine how school structure influence student's academic achievement in public secondary school in Ovia north-east local government area. The study sought to examine the impact of school library, school location, school facilities and structural elements on secondary school students in Ovia north-east local government. Research questions were raised to guide the study.

The descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study in order to collect data for the study. The research instrument employed was the questionnaire titled " Questionnaire on the effect of school structure and environment on the performance of secondary school students in Ovia north-east local government area in Edo State". The study's population contains over one hundred and seventy (170) schools in Ovia north east local government area. The study's sample was one hundred and fifty (150) students from five (5) different secondary schools . The following are salient findings;

Based on the respondents' responses , it was found that school location significantly affects students academic achievement, as qualify teachers do not want to be posted to location in the rural environment, due to the insufficient availability of resources like libraries, tutorial center , and writing materials .

It was also fouythat accessibility of school facilities like science laboratories, computer labs, projectors , internet , sport field, playground, auditorium, halls, contribute to a holistic education and ehances understanding of subject and learning experience.

The result of the analysis conducted also revealed that the noise level in the school environment affects the ability of students to concentrate during lessons. Classrooms that are small in size , with ventilation, lighting, safe and secure positively impact focus and encourage students to learn.

It also revealed that schools with instructional leadership like principal, administrative team with data-driven taking positively influence the overall school environment causing high academic performance.

The study also revealed the impact of school library on the academic performance of students, they include : critical thinking, improvement in academic skills, information literacy and higher grade in reading assessment.

Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made :
