ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of poverty on single motherhood and the implication for social work practice with the objective to determine the impact of poverty to single motherhood; to detect challenges faced by single mothers; to identify the mechanisms that single mothers use to manage the uncertainty arising from poverty andto find out how social worker help mitigate the effects of poverty on single motherhood. The investigation limited itself to the study of single mothers and poverty levels in Nigeria. The study concentrated in understanding the concept of single motherhood and poverty in Nigeria. The population of this study was made up of single mothers in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study covers all single mothers in Edo State, where the questionnaire was distributed to carry out the analysis of the research work. The size for the study on which questionnaires were administered was 150 from single mothers in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. They were randomly selected from four different location which are 3rd Circular, Ogbe, Ibiwe, and Ikpemai to generate data about their perceptions and opinions as regards to the effect of poverty on single motherhood and the implication for social work practice. The method employed for the research was the simple statistical method such as the simple percentage to deduce the effective and interpret the further necessary discussions. Moreover, after the analyses and interpretation of data the researcher then conclude and give recommendation.
