ABSTRACT
This study aimed at examining the effect of pidgin on the spoken English of primary school pupils in Uhunwode Local Government Area of Edo State. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The design adopted for this study is the survey research design. The sample consisted of 184 respondents which were primary five and six pupil in the study area. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from 184 (one hundred and eighty) respondents which were basically pupil. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor. The test re-test method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher herself. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
Findings revealed that the frequency of usage of the Pidgin English among primary pupils is very high. It was also revealed that students enjoy speaking Pidgin English with their friends.
Based on the findings, it was recommended that various school authorities should intensify their monitoring and evaluation as well as enhance their teacher’s code of ethics. Teachers found speaking to students or among themselves in the presence of students should be severely punished to deter the use of the language.
