ABSTRACT

This project centres mainly on the effect of mother tongue (Igbo) on the study of English Language. It tries to investigate how the phonology of Igbo Language influences the study of English. The primary objectives of this project work is out to identify the difficulties faced by Igbo speakers in the study of English Language, and how these problems can be overcome. The framework for this research is centered on applied linguistics approach since it tries to describe the degree of interference of Igbo in English Language. Chapter one is basically an introduction highlighting the general background of the study such as geographical location of the people, while chapter two exposes the relevant literature on language, transfer, interference, Bilingualism and code-switching. Chapter three examines the linguistic theory for language acquisition and first language interference and chapter four is on the sound system of Igbo and English languages, the influence of Igbo on English and a touch of the structure of Igbo on English. Chapter five is summary of findings, recommendation, conclusion and references.
