ABSTRACT

The research study investigated the effect of library automation on the job performance of librarians in John Harris library, University of Benin. Three (3) research questions were raised for the study. The study adopted research design. The population of the study consists of all the librarians in John Harris library, University of Benin.180 librarians formed the sample population for the study which was randomly selected to represent the total population of the study. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire; it was built around the research question by the researcher and validated by the researcher’s supervisor.180 copies of the questionnaire were printed and distributed to the sample population and was retrieved on the spot after filling to ensure 100% retrieval. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation. The major findings of the study are as follows: the level of automation skills possessed by librarians for their job performance in John Harris library are: using the library's LMS for cataloging and managing library collections, handling digital archiving processes, such as digitization, metadata creation, and preservation, managing electronic resources, including ebooks, e-journals, and databases, utilizing ILS software for tasks like circulation, patron management, and acquisitions and generating data analytics reports for library usage, budgeting, and planning. Automation of library impacted on the job performance of librarians in John Harris library through the following ways: the automation of materials and resources has improved the promptness of librarians, automation of administrative tasks of librarians had increased their effectiveness, Automation of library services has improved librarians user engagement and communication and Librarians are able to manage data and resources efficiently with the help of xii automation of library services on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are made: University authorities should keep developing through on the job training the ICT skills of Librarians in John Harris Library amongst others.
