Abstract

Learning can be reinforced with teaching aid of different variety to stimulate, motivate, as well as arrest learner’s attention for a while during the instructional process. This study Investigated the Effect of Instructional Materials in the Learning of Economics in Secondary School in Edo State.

   A descriptive survey was employed in this study. Five(5) research questions were raised to guide the study. The target population consist all public school in Ikopba-Okha of Edo state, sample consist of a total of (100) hundred respondents comprises of 10 permanent economics and 90 students from Saint Maria Gorreti Girls Grammar school in Ikopba-Okha local government area of Edo state using simple random sampling technique.

A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Management; while the test- re test reliability method was adopted to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.

The study reveals that Instructional materials used by Economics teachers in secondary schools in Ikpoba okha government area of Edo state include; projector, computer, chart, graphs , and pictures, the areas in which teachers use instructional materials include; when teaching demand and supply, elasticity of demand, consumer behavior, price determination , and inflation, the stages of lesson teachers make use of instructional materials during the Economic lesson include; economics teachers used instructional materials only when is accessible, necessary, available, only in the morning classes, and when sufficient, the performance of students taught with instructional materials include; students easily remember what has be taught,find it easy in the examination hall, can easily recall teaching from previous class , tend to pass their exams and test, and develop good retention, the  suggestions that can be made to improve the use of instructional materials include; that enough fund should be allocated in getting instructional materials, teachers should be trained on the importance of instructional materials , Instructional materials should be made available all the time and should be used in all areas of Economics, and that time table should be set to accommodate instructional materials.Based on the findings the following recommendations was made;Government should make instructional media accessible and evenly available to all schools to complement the teaching and learning process, teachers should be willing to embrace instructional media and be encouraged to incorporate its use to assist their teaching which allows subject contents to be more concrete and flexible for students, the need for information dissemination and training on currently emerging technologies for teachers cannot be short-changed. Trainings, workshops and seminars should be conducted on regular basis because technology keeps improving every day and the teachers need to be kept abreast of new developments, enough fund should be allocated in getting instructional materials, instructional materials should be made available all the time and should be used in all areas of Economics.
