ABSTRACT

The study examined the effect of increasing population in Nigeria. The objective of the study are to ascertain the effect of Nigeria increasing population on economic growth; to investigate the causal relationship between population growth and economic welfare and to determine whether long run relationship exist between Nigeria increasing population and living condition.

The descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. One hundred and fifty (150) copies of questionnaire were distributed to ac to residence in Egor LGA,, Benin City, Edo state. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean while the hypothesis was tested using ANOVA with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The empirical result revealed that that increasing population has a significant effect on economic growth. The study concludes that problems or any challenges caused by increasing population in Nigeria as not a looming crisis but failure on the part of Nigerian government to device needful population control and poverty reduction policies that would be highly pragmatic and participatory for the betterment of the Nigerians. The study recommends that Nigerian government need to start addressing the challenges posed by its large population which calls for response measures through appropriate programs that would integrate the country’s population policies into the mainstream development efforts.
