ABSTRACT

The study investigated the effect of food price inflation on household welfare in Nigeria for the period of 1981 to 2021. It aims to ascertain if there is a negative and significant relationship between food price inflation and household welfare in Nigeria and also if there exists a positive and insignificant relationship between money supply and Per Capital Income in Nigeria. The study would be of utmost significance to students and other researchers who are interested in unraveling the misery between food price inflation and house hold welfare in less developing countries. Time series data on Per Capita Income, Consumer Price Index, Money Supply, Interest Rate, and Total Government Expenditure was used in the analysis of the relationship between food price inflation and household welfare of the economy. The technique of estimation used include: Firstly, preliminary results are provided which involves descriptive statistics, trend analysis, and ADF unit root test for stationarity. Furthermore, the Co-integration and error correction model results. The result showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between food price inflation (CPI) and household welfare (PCI) in Nigeria Also, there exists a positive and insignificant relationship between money supply (MSS) and PCI in Nigeria.
