ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the effect of ethanol extract of Spondias mombin leaf on reduced glutathione level and lipid peroxidation level in 1,2–dimethylhydrazine(DMH) induced colon carcinogenesis in wistar rats. A total number of 35 wistar rats were divided into five groups with seven in each groups. Group A was fed with normal diet and it served as the normal control. Group B was administered DMH(40mg/kg b.w.i p) and it served as the negative control. Group C was administered DMH (40mg/kg b.w.i p)and treated with Xeloda which served as positive control. Group D was administered DMH (40mg/kg b.w.i p) and treated with ethanol extract. Group was administered DMH (40mg/kg b.w.i p)and treated with hydroethanol extract. The duration of the experiment was for the period of 7 weeks. The result showed that rats induced with DMH decreased significantly (p<0.05) GSH level when compared to the control.however, rats administered 500 mg/kg of ethanol extract of Spondias mombin leaves showed a significant increase in GSH level. Also rats induced with DMH significantly increased(p<0.05) MDA levels levels when compared to the normal control.however, rats administered 500mg/kg of ethanol extract of of Spondias mombin leaves showed significant reduction in MDA levels when compared to normal controls. This study showed that DMH induced colon carcinogenesis and administration of Spondias mombin reversed the adversed effects in ways which suggests antioxidants property.
