ABSTRACT
The effect of ethanol extract of Solanum nigrum leaves on catalaseactivity in oval bum insensitized guinea pigs after histamine challenge was investigated in this study. 25maleguineapigs, three weeks old were divided into five groups offive pigs each. All animals were given access to standard animal food and water. Inaddition, the guinea pigs were pre-sensitized with oval bumin followed by exposure to 2% histamine aerosol after an over night fast, the pre-convulsion time was recorded. Animal sing roups2, 3, and 4 were given ethanol extract of solanum nigrum leaves atthe respective doses of 50, 100, and200 mg/kg bw while animals in group 5 were given 25mg/kg bw of a reference drug aminophylline. After drug administration, the animals were again exposed to histamine aerosol and pre-convulsion time was recorded after which all the animals were sacrificed and their lungs were expelled for biochemical analysis. According to the results obtained, oval bumin sensitization and exposure to histamine aerosolled to an increase in lipid peroxidation in bronchial alveolar tissue, lung, and plasmacells and on treatment with ethanol extract of solanum nigrum leaves, adrastic increase in catala seactivity was observed at all concentrations and durations, indicating that the extract prevented catalase from being consumed by scavenging the free radicals resulting from asthma attack.
