ABSTRACT

Carbon tetrachloride exerts multi-organ toxicity, especially on the liver, lung, and spleen in humans and animals by triggering the release of inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-I6 and interleukin-Iβ is responsible for the multi-organ toxicity of Carbon tetrachloride. Thus, these toxicities induced by Carbon tetrachloride to animals can be controlled by the Ethanol present in Chasmanthera dependens plant extract from the roots and stems, which this research proposed. This research work investigated the effect of ethanol of chasmantera dependens on inflammatory marker-1L-1β, 1L-6 and TNF which are the constituent  in Carbon tetrachloride inducing toxicity in humans and animals. Twenty-five rats were used for the experiment, and they were divided into five groups: Normal control, negative control, positive control, absolute ethanol of 250mg/kg  and absolute ethanol of 500mg/kg. At the end of the experiment, blood was withdrawn from the rats via cardiac puncture, the samples were taken to the lab, and were tested.  The result shows that there was a significant increase(p<0.05) in IL-1β, wheras a non-significant decrease(p>0.05) in TNF when compared with the untreated group.
