ABSTRACT

The EndSARS protest in Nigeria in October 2020 sparked a nationwide movement against police brutality and demanded an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The protest had profound effects on various sectors of Nigerian society, including the education system. This project aims to investigate the impacts of the EndSARS protest on Nigerian education, focusing on the University of Benin (UNIBEN) as a case study. This research project will adopt a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to gather data and provide a comprehensive analysis. The study will begin with an extensive literature review to explore the existing knowledge on the effects of social movements on education. Primary data will be collected through structured interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions involving students, faculty members, and university administrators at UNIBEN. The project will examine various dimensions of the effects of the EndSARS protest on Nigerian education, including disruptions to academic calendars, psychological impacts on students, changes in teaching and learning methods, and the role of social media in shaping the protest narrative. Additionally, it will explore the responses and measures taken by UNIBEN to address the challenges faced during and after the protest. The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the effects of social movements on education and serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, educational institutions, and stakeholders in Nigeria. It will provide insights into the specific challenges faced by UNIBEN and recommendations for improving the resilience and adaptability of the education system in the face of social movements.
