ABSTRACT

This study investigates the pressing issue of drug abuse among youth in Nigerian universities, with a specific focus on the University of Benin (UNIBEN). The prevalence of drug abuse among Nigerian youth, including university students, has raised profound concerns about its repercussions on both academic and personal dimensions of their lives. The study reveals that drug abuse patterns encompass various aspects, from the types and frequency of drugs used to the circumstances and influencers involved. The research findings underline the pivotal role of peer influence in shaping drug-related decisions among university students. It is evident that in the study that students are significantly influenced by peers who use drugs, leading to an alarming rate of drug abuse within this demographic. This influence is further compounded by factors such as stress, curiosity, and the desire to fit in or cope with life's challenges. The consequences of drug abuse are far-reaching and impactful. The study identifies a range of negative outcomes associated with drug abuse, including truancy or absenteeism from school, risky sexual behavior, theft or robbery, hooliganism or gangsterism, joining cult groups, mental disorders, and even suicide or self-harm behaviors. These effects reverberate not only in the personal lives of the affected students but also in the broader social fabric of the university community. Of particular concern is the revelation that drug abuse significantly impairs academic performance. The study affirms that drug-abusing students often struggle with memory lapses, reduced seriousness in their academic work, poor academic scores, and increased absenteeism from lessons and classes. These academic challenges, exacerbated by drug abuse, threaten to undermine the educational journey of affected students. In response to these pressing issues, the study recommends a multifaceted approach to address drug abuse at the University of Benin. It underscores the importance of comprehensive awareness campaigns, holistic peer support programs, enhanced counseling services, curriculum integration of drug abuse education, promotion of alternative recreational activities, and collaborative efforts among university authorities, parents, community leaders, and law enforcement agencies. In conclusion, this research sheds light on the complex problem of drug abuse among university students in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate its adverse effects. The findings and recommendations are valuable not only for the University of Benin but also for universities across Nigeria facing similar challenges.
