ABSTRACT
The study examined the effect of depression and suicide on University students and the social work intervention. The objective of the study is to know the prevalence of suicidal attempts among undergraduates of universities in Nigeria, find out causes of depression among Nigeria undergraduates; to know what the Nigerian university students perceive to trigger suicidal thoughts and suicide among Nigeria undergraduates; to examine the roles of social workers in curbing the increasing rate of depression and suicide and to find out preventive measures that is to be adopted against suicidal behaviors among the undergraduates of Universities.
The survey research design was adopted for this study. Two hundred and fifty (250) copies of questionnaire were distributed to students of university of Benin, Benin City, Edo state. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.
The empirical result revealed that revealed that that suicidal attempt is common among undergraduates of universities in Nigeria; that depression has been identified as a major factor leading to suicide among university students and that there are preventive measures that is to be adopted against suicidal behaviors among the undergraduates of universities. The study concludes that Suicide prevention in Nigerian universities requires adequate funding by the federal government and health institutions in Nigeria and recommends funding for creating awareness about suicide, restructuring the physical environment to suit the health needs of the students, improving cordial relationships between students and lecturers, and establishing a working mental health facility in every university in Nigeria.
