ABSTRACT

This study is to investigate the effect of Covid-19 lockdown on academics:  Perception of senior secondary Chemistry students in Egor local government area of Edo state Benin City. Three research questions were raised in order to carry out this study.

Data were collected through questionnaires that were randomly distributed to five schools in the Local Government Area. The techniques used for analysis were the simple frequency, percentage and mean based on a four point Likert scale. The population of the study was 4639 but the sample was 100 students randomly selected. Five (5) schools were randomly selected from the thirteen (13) Senior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To ascertain the reliability of the instrument, pilot testing was carried out on twenty (20) SS 2 students from a mixed public senior secondary school.

Based on the research it was discovered that  firstly, Students desire to study Chemistry at home was decreased during COVID-19 pandemic, secondly, Chemistry students not seeing their chemistry teacher during covid19 lockdown, makes learning have negative effect on them. Then finally, interruption of school 2020 academic calendar affects students’ psychologically, emotionally and intellectually when learning Chemistry.
