ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to identify the effect of COVID-19 induced school lockdown on teaching and learning of science subjects. the effects of COVID-19 induced school lockdown on teaching and learning of science subjects, Pedagogies for Continuing Education during the COVID-19, Psychological impact of COVID 19 induced lockdown on science students and ways of enhancing the use of e-learning for teaching and learning of science subjects. Four research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study, namely: what are the effects of covid-19 induced school lockdown on teaching and learning of science subjects? Are there pedagogies for continuing education during the Covid-19? What are the psychological impact of Covid-19 induced lockdown on science students? and what are the possible ways of enhancing the use of e-learning for teaching and learning science subjects?. The data was collected in a questionnaire titled: Effect of Covid-19 Induced School Lockdown on Teaching and Learning of Science Subjects Questionnaire”
The design of the research in a descriptive survey was carried out using relevant literature from journals, magazines, books and the internet. A random sampling technique was used in selection of fifty (50) science teachers were randomly selected from 13 public senior secondary schools in Ovia north east local government area of Edo state. The data were collected with questionnaire instrument and analyzed using simple percentage.
The result revealed that; COVID-19 led to poor academic achievement /mass failure in external exams in science subjects and led to widening inequality in Education, especially in science subjects, Covid-19, Radio, WhatsApp messages, and skype were pedagogies means for Continuing Education for teaching science, psychological impact of COVID-19-induced lockdowns on science students are lack of interest to return back to school, depression set in for students especially those in graduating classes, and anti-social behaviors, possible ways of enhancing the use of e-learning for teaching and learning science subjects are the provision of a stable internet provider to support easy and fast learning and teaching, basic knowledge of how to operate computers and computer-related tools should be given to both the students and teachers and specified educational soft wares should be built for science subjects Based on the results, it was recommended that, since it was observed that there were no proper plans in place to curb and manage the influence of coronavirus on the educational system, it is highly recommended for the government and concerned educational personnel should ensure there are futuristic plans to in case of another similar experience, having observed that even the E-Learning chosen as the alternatives to be used in reaching out to the learners in the period of lockdown has not successfully work because of non unemployment of expert to manage the ICT section of the Nigeria Education system, huge tariff charges from various network providers in Nigeria. Therefore it is advisable for the Nigeria ministry of education to employ experts in the area of ICT to further introduce programs that will enhance the productivity of the education sector in order to compete with the outside world even in the period of global pandemic lockdown, government should make more monetary provisions to improve the school systems in line with the demand of covid-19 to make the institution more competitive globally, finally, though, NCDC has been at the forefront in the control of the pandemic, but the government has the responsibility to monitor and enforce peoples’ compliance with the safety guidelines..
