THE EFFECT OF COVID 19 IN THE NIGERIAN PUBLIC SERVICE

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to investigate into the role of the government in e-learning and how students and lecturers were able to cope with learning and teaching from home respectively. This research work focuses on the members of the public service in the University of Benin and the identification of the effects of COVID 19 on the public service and also to explore how the lecturers were able to face the challenges of e-learning. The statement of problem is anchored on the part of both the lecturers and the students in the use of e-learning method. The proportionate stratified random sampling method was used in selecting 50 respondents from the staffs of the University of Benin; the simple percentage method was used for the data analysis. The finding of the study revealed that majority of the respondents believed that the education sector was negatively affected by COVID 19 and that e-learning as an alternative means of learning was not flawless and that the government did not offer much support to the education sector. This was contained in the responses provided in the questionnaire by the respondents; it was therefore recommended that the government should have made provisions for the adequate funding of tertiary institutions in order to cushion the effect of any form of emergencies such as the COVID 19 pandemic in this study.
