ABSTRACT

The study sought to explore how coach-athlete relationships influence the motivation and performance of student-athletes at the University of Benin, utilizing a sample size of 182 participants selected through stratified simple random sampling. Descriptive statistics, including frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, were employed for data analysis.

In examining demographic data, the study revealed a balanced distribution of respondents with 48.9% being male and 51.1% female. The age distribution showed that 17-20 years olds constituted 17%, 21-24 years olds were 20%, 25-28 years olds comprised 35%, and those aged 29 and above accounted for 28%. Furthermore, the study highlighted the diverse participation in various Nuga sports, with athletics, football, and taekwondo being the most prominent.

Regarding the coach-athlete relationship, the findings indicated positive perceptions among respondents. Coaches were recognized for showing interest in athletes' well-being, treating all athletes fairly, and valuing their input on training and competition strategies. Athletes expressed a sense of comfort in discussing sport-related concerns with their coaches, emphasizing the importance of effective communication.

The study uncovered a strong correlation between positive coach-athlete relationships and enhanced performance. Athletes believed that their performance would decline if the relationship with their coach deteriorated, highlighting the pivotal role coaches play in the athletic journey.

In terms of emotional support and trust, the majority of athletes perceived their coaches as trustworthy, empathetic, and respectful. Coaches were acknowledged for providing emotional support during challenging situations, fostering a supportive and understanding environment.

Strategies for improvement resonated with the participants, with consensus on the effectiveness of increased positive feedback, individual consultations, team-building activities, and personal development opportunities. These strategies were identified as valuable contributors to strengthening the coach-athlete relationship.

In conclusion, the study emphasized the significant impact of positive coach-athlete relationships on the motivation and performance of student-athletes at the University of Benin. Emotional support, effective communication, and trust were identified as key elements in fostering a conducive environment for athletic development. The findings underscored the importance of investing in coach training programs and promoting positive coaching practices to enhance the overall athletic experience for student-athletes.
