ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of co-habitation on the socialization of UNIBEN students living in private hostels in Benin city, Edo State. Four (4) research questions were generated to guide the study.

The researcher adopted descriptive survey research design for the study and the major instruments used for data collection was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated and the reliability was determined through test- retest method. Forty (40) students were drawn from five (5) different hostels, making the total sample for this study two hundred (200) choose through simple random sampling techniques.

Based on the findings made, it was further revealed that students practice co-habitation due to lack of parental care and financial assistance. It was further revealed that the high cost of private hostels and lack of sufficient school hostels has contributed to the rise in co-habitation. Based on the findings, it was recommended that parents should act as a guide and provide for their children as well as living an exemplary life that is worthy of emulation. It was further recommended that school management should make conscious effort to provide more on-campus accommodation as well as regular sensitization programmes for the students.
