THE EFFECT OF CHILDHOOD TRAUMA IN THE LIVES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of childhood trauma in the lives of university student in university of Benin, Edo state and six research questions were raised to guide the study. The research work adopts descriptive survey design and makes use of proportionate sampling techniques, mean and standard deviation to analyze the data collected through the use of questionnaire which serves as the research instrument. The data collected were analyzed. The finding of the study revealed that childhood trauma has impact on academic performance; it has also impact on one’s social relationships and interaction with others;it has effect on the lives of students psychologically and emotionally; it also has effect on the health and wellbeing of student amongst others. The study concluded that the effect of childhood trauma in the lives of university students in the university of Benin, Edo state. It was recommended amongst that the school should carry out seminars and programme so as to create awareness, inform or educate the academic communities about childhood trauma, the sings of traumatic stress and the effect it has on students or implement trauma-informed approach. Furthermore, there should be advocate of mental health and family support services.
