Abstract
Solanum Melongena, under the family of solanaceae, popularly known as eggplant has been largely grown for its attractive fruits which have been used as a supplement to a variety of dishes around the world. This study was carried out to investigate the haematological effect of the eggplant on both male and female wistar rat, with dosage administration at 10%, 30% and 50% of their daily diet for two weeks. Forty-eight wistar rats, 24 males and 24 female respectively, grouped into eight groups with the males and females being kept in separate cages to avoid mating as this may interfere with results (i.e group control to group 50%) of six animals each. Animals in group 10% to 50% were administered with doses: 10%, 30% and 50% of Solanum Melongena in their daily diet while animals in group control were fed the normal mash pellet and served as control. From the result obtained, there were no significant variance (p≥0.05) in the levels of some haematological parameters such as white blood cell count, monocyte count, lymphocyte count, haemoglobin count, granulocyte count and the mean corpuscular volume but some other parameters such as red blood cell counts, haematocrit, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, platelet count, mean platelets volume and mean corpuscular volume showed significant increase indicating that Solanum Melongena can be used to treat certain disorders like hemophilia, low blood count amongst others. Significant decrease observed in the weight of the rats fed with the Solanum Melongena in their daily diet showed that this plant can be used to treat excessive weight(obesity) also its high fiber content can be used to treat digestive issues like constipation, indigestion as the fiber helps aid peristaltic movement in the intestinal tract.
